How to Read Labels on Clean Beauty and Wellness Products

The beauty and personal care aisles can be a minefield of fancy marketing misdirects.

Terms like "wholesome," “natural,” “green,” and “pure” aren’t strictly regulated, so it’s essential to look past the front of the package and scan the ingredient list.

That's where you'll see what's really IN it.

Keep an eye out for common red flags like parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, SLS/SLES, PEG compounds, and “urea” derivatives.

Be vigilant with vague terms like “fragrance” or “parfum” as these can be a code word for dozens of undisclosed chemicals. Instead, choose clear, clean ingredients, and go for products that list all components, including essential oils for scent.

Look for third-party labels such as USDA Organic, EWG Verified, or Ecocert to signal intentional transparency. Apps like Think Dirty or the EWG’s Skin Deep database can help you verify product safety.

When in doubt, less is more. A shorter ingredient list can mean fewer unwanted chemicals on your skin and in your overall life.
